GATE ECE 2027 Syllabus Changes: Every Word That Moved
The GATE 2027 Electronics and Communication syllabus differs from the 2026 one in twelve added phrases and five removed phrases, compared word by word from the two official PDFs. The eight section headings are identical, so nothing was created, deleted, renamed or merged. Digital Circuits and Electromagnetics did not change at all.
In this guide
Four of those differences genuinely change what you study. Two of the four name ground the papers had already tested, and that distinction is the whole point of this guide, because a phrase that is newly named is not a phrase with no history.
Key takeaways
- Twelve phrases added, five removed, eight section headings unchanged. This is a tidy-up, not a rewrite.
- Four differences are substantive: FIR and IIR filter design, PID control in place of the named compensator types, correlation and regression analysis arriving as nonlinear first-order differential equations leave, and energy-band formation with MOSFET scaling.
- Two of those four are newly named rather than new ground. GATE 2019 Q39 and Q54 are both filter-design questions, and GATE 2026 Q38 already asked correlation, though not regression.
- Only PID control and the energy-band and scaling pair have no counted precedent in the papers read for this analysis.
- Four further differences between the two PDFs are typesetting artefacts, including one outright typo in the official 2027 document. Do not add them to your plan as changes.
The headline numbers

|---|---|
| Section headings in 2026 | 8 |
| Section headings in 2027 | 8 |
| Phrases added in 2027 | 12 |

The four that change what you study
FIR and IIR filter design — newly named, not new
This is the largest single addition anywhere in the 2027 EC syllabus. It is not a rephrasing of anything in the 2026 document; it is a named design skill added to the Discrete-time Signals paragraph.
It is also the one most often written up as a topic with no track record, and that is wrong. GATE 2019 Q39 and Q54 are both filter-design questions, both worth 2 marks, both in the Networks, Signals and Systems section. In the 2019 booklet's own numbering those are EC Q.29 and EC Q.44, so you can check them for yourself in the paper linked below. Together they are 4 of that paper's 14 Networks marks — more than a quarter of the section, from the line a reader would have assumed was brand new.
And 2019 is the paper set by IIT Madras, the institute setting GATE 2027. So the correct reading is not "a new topic with no history". It is that the syllabus named something this institute was already willing to ask without the naming. Two questions in one paper is a precedent, not a rate: it does not license a marks figure, and nothing here says filter design is worth four marks in 2027.
Correlation and regression analysis — already rehearsed in 2026
Correlation and regression analysis is new in the 2027 Probability and Statistics list, and it arrives in the same edit that removes first order equations (linear and nonlinear) from Differential Equations. That pairing is the substantive change in Engineering Mathematics: statistics widens, nonlinear first-order equations go.
The precedent here is more recent than the filter-design one. GATE 2026 Q38 already asked correlation — a 2-mark question on the correlation of one random variable with two functions of it. A syllabus item that is both newly named and already tested in the most recent paper is the strongest combination a change list can produce.
Regression is the half of the phrase with no counted precedent at all, and it is also the half with a fixed computational recipe: the least-squares line of y on x, the two regression lines being different lines, and the fact that the fitted line passes through the mean point.
PID controller, in place of the named compensator types
Control Systems loses lag and lead and lag-lead compensation and gains compensators and PID controller. Read the removals and additions together, because separately they mislead.
You have not been given permission to skip lead and lag compensators. They are the standard content of the general word "compensators", which is what replaced them. What changed is that PID is now named alongside them and the enumerated list of types is gone. Of the four substantive changes, PID control is one of the two with no counted precedent, so treat it as ground to cover rather than as a pattern to drill.
Energy bands and MOSFET scaling in Electronic Devices
Electronic Devices gains formation of energy bands in solids at the front of the section and scaling in MOSFETs beside MOSFET in the device list. Scaling names short-channel behaviour and the scaling relations as examinable rather than as background.
This is the other pair with no counted precedent. That is a statement about the papers read, not a prediction that it will be asked, and the honest position is that a newly named line in a section whose counted mean is 8.8 marks deserves a couple of hours, not a week.
The pairs that look like two changes and are one
Three of the five removals are not removals in any practical sense, because a new phrase stands in the same place.
- Sampling theorem and applications and discrete-time processing of continuous-time signals are gone; Nyquist sampling theorem and sampling and reconstruction stand in their place. Sampling did not leave the syllabus. It was renamed and narrowed slightly, because "applications" was open-ended in a way that "sampling and reconstruction" is not.
- Lag and lead and lag-lead compensation are gone; compensators stands in their place, as described above.
There are also two rewrites where the words changed and the requirement did not. In Engineering Mathematics, "Cauchy's and Euler's equations" became "Euler-Cauchy equation" and "higher order linear differential equations" became "linear differential equations" — one reorganisation of a single entry, not two changes, and it removes neither the equidimensional equation nor higher-order linear equations. In Analog Circuits, "Schmitt triggers" became "Schmitt trigger". That is the whole difference.
One reordering is easy to miss because nothing was added or removed to signal it. In 2026 the Networks section ran Circuit Analysis, then Sinusoidal steady state analysis, then Continuous-time Signals, then Discrete-time Signals, then LTI systems. In 2027 LTI systems moves up ahead of both signal paragraphs. Not a word of that paragraph changed; it simply stopped being the last thing in the section.
Four differences that are not changes at all
A text comparison of two PDFs picks up how a document was typeset as readily as what it says. Four differences here are of that kind, and none is a syllabus change.
| Section | 2026 prints | 2027 prints | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Control Systems | "Bode and root- locus plots" | "Bode and root-locus plots" | Line wrap inside a hyphenated word, in the 2026 PDF |
| Communications | "auto correlation and power spectral density" | "autocorrelation and power spectral density" | Word split across a line break in the 2026 PDF |
| Communications | "inter-symbol interference" | "inter- symbol interference" | The same wrap, this time in the 2027 PDF |
| Electromagnetics | "S-parameters" | "Sparameters" | A typo in the official 2027 PDF |
The first three tell you nothing. The fourth is a genuine defect in the published document rather than a line wrap, but it is still not a syllabus change: S-parameters were examinable in 2026 and are examinable in 2027, and a missing hyphen changes nothing about the topic. Anyone running a text tool over the two PDFs will hit all four, and adding them to a revision plan means preparing for four phantom changes.
What to actually do about it
Do not restructure your preparation around this change list. Twelve phrases in and five out, with the eight headings untouched, is a document being tidied rather than a paper being redesigned.
Do three specific things. Put filter design on the list properly, because the design idea has precedent with the institute setting the next paper. Add correlation and regression to your statistics work, because it is named now and was asked in the most recent paper. Give PID control and MOSFET scaling a defined, small slot, because they are named and untested rather than named and rehearsed — and label anything you conclude about them as a prediction, not a finding. The ECE book works each of these through with the question numbers behind them and the topic-level detail this guide only summarises.
Then confirm the syllabus yourself. Download the current PDF from the official GATE 2027 site before you plan around any third-party summary, this one included, and check the exam dates and the admit card and exam-day rules from the same source while you are there. General Aptitude is unchanged and still 15 marks, so the aptitude section needs no adjustment at all.
Frequently asked questions
Has the GATE EC syllabus changed for 2027?
Yes, but modestly. Comparing the official 2026 and 2027 EC syllabus PDFs word by word gives twelve phrases added and five removed. The eight section headings are identical, so nothing was created, merged or renamed. Digital Circuits and Electromagnetics have no change at all. Confirm against the current PDF on the official GATE 2027 site.
What is newly added to the GATE 2027 ECE syllabus?
Twelve phrases. The ones that matter most are FIR and IIR filter design in Networks, Signals and Systems, correlation and regression analysis in Engineering Mathematics, PID controller and compensators in Control Systems, and formation of energy bands in solids with scaling in MOSFETs in Electronic Devices. The rest name explicitly what the 2026 text already implied.
What was removed from the GATE EC syllabus for 2027?
Five phrases. First order equations linear and nonlinear leaves Engineering Mathematics. Discrete-time processing of continuous-time signals and sampling theorem and applications leave Networks. Lag and lead and lag-lead compensation leave Control Systems. Three of the five are replaced by new wording for the same ground rather than genuinely dropped.
Is FIR and IIR filter design really a new GATE EC topic?
The syllabus line is new; the topic is not. GATE 2019 Q39 and Q54 are both filter-design questions, both worth 2 marks, and 2019 was set by IIT Madras, the institute setting GATE 2027. The syllabus did not invent filter design for 2027. It named something that institute was already asking without the naming.
Do I need to study correlation and regression for GATE ECE 2027?
Yes. Correlation and regression analysis is new to the 2027 Engineering Mathematics list, and the 2026 paper already asked it — Q38 was a 2-mark question on correlation. A topic that is both newly named and already tested in the most recent paper is as strong a case for studying it as a syllabus change can make.
Where can I download the official GATE 2027 EC syllabus PDF?
From the GATE 2027 website run by IIT Madras, linked in the sources below, under Syllabus on the front page. The 2026 EC syllabus is published the same way by IIT Guwahati. Both are short documents. Syllabus pages move between years, so check the current notification rather than an old link.
