GATE 2027 Admit Card and Exam Day Rules

The GATE 2027 admit card is downloaded from GOAPS on the official GATE 2027 website, and the download date has not been announced yet: the official Information Brochure prints it as "To be Announced". What is already fixed is everything that happens on exam day, and most of the marks lost before the paper even starts are lost here. Two documents get you in, and a long list of ordinary objects gets you thrown out.

Downloading and printing the admit card

Admit cards appear on the GOAPS portal. They are not posted and not emailed. Print on A4, preferably in colour, and check that your photograph and signature are legible on the printed sheet, because the brochure says the admit card is valid only if they are clear.

The moment you download it, verify four things against your application: your name spelling, the test paper code (CS), the session, and the centre address. Requests to change the centre, city, date or time after the admit card is issued are not entertained. Any query about the application, the centre, the admit card or results goes to the zonal GATE office you were assigned at application time, whose contact details are in the brochure, or to the GATE 2027 helpdesk.

Print at least two copies and keep one in a different bag. A printer failure the night before is a solvable problem a week earlier and an unsolvable one at 7 AM.

The ID rule, which trips up more candidates than anything else

You must bring the original of the same photo ID whose number you entered during the online application. Not a photocopy, not a scan on your phone, not an expired document, and not a different ID that happens to be handier.

The brochure names these as acceptable during application: Aadhaar-UID (stated as preferable), Aadhaar Virtual ID, a government-issued ID, passport, PAN card, voter ID or driving licence. The document must clearly show name, photograph, ID number and date of birth. For foreign nationals appearing at Indian centres, only a valid passport, government-issued ID or driving licence is accepted.

DigiLocker registration is part of the 2027 application flow for Indian nationals, and the ID verified through it is the one you carry. If your name on the ID differs from the name on the admit card even slightly, sort it out with the zonal office well before February rather than arguing at the gate. The exam day timeline

Two practical consequences. First, the twenty minutes of instruction reading are free time you have already paid for. Use them to settle your breathing and to confirm the question palette layout, not to skim the instructions you have seen in ten mock tests. Second, because you cannot leave early, finishing at 2 hours 20 minutes is not a result. It is forty minutes of second-pass checking you did not do. What you cannot carry inside

The brochure's prohibited list is broad, and the rule is possession, not use. Candidates found with any of these are disqualified whether or not they used them:

• Calculators of any kind
• Mobile phones, even switched off
• Bluetooth devices and any other electronic or communication devices
• Watches of any form: analog, digital and smart watches
• Wallets
• Books, papers, loose sheets, data or handbooks, tables
• Pen or pencil boxes and pouches
• Printed or hand-written textual material

Communication of any kind between candidates inside the hall is prohibited. Tampering with the computer or its hardware leads to summary cancellation and possible legal action. The brochure also states that the GATE committee reserves the right to ban a candidate found involved in malpractice from appearing in GATE for the next three years, and that GATE is not responsible for safeguarding personal belongings left outside.

Read that last point twice. There is often no locker. Travel light: admit card, original ID, a transparent water bottle if the centre allows one, and nothing else you would mind losing.

Scribble pads and rough work

Rough work is done on scribble pads issued by the invigilator, and the rules are specific:

1. Write your name and registration number on the pad before you start using it.
2. You may hold only one pad at a time.
3. To get a second pad, return the first to the invigilator.
4. Tearing sheets out of a pad is prohibited.
5. Every pad in your possession must be returned before you leave the hall.

Rule 2 has a real cost for a CS paper full of multi-step numericals. If you scatter a cache-mapping calculation across three corners of a pad, you will hand it in and lose the working you wanted to recheck. Practise with a single sheet: date the top, number each question's working, and keep it dense but linear.

The calculator you will actually use

No physical calculator is allowed. A virtual scientific calculator is provided on screen and the brochure says candidates must use only that one. It also states that the calculator, previous year question papers and mock examination links will be accessible through the GATE 2027 official website.

A checklist for the night before

• Printed admit card, two copies, one in a separate bag
• Original photo ID, the same one named in the application
• Centre address confirmed on a map, with travel time checked for a weekend morning
• Phone, watch and wallet planned for: decide now where they will stay
• Alarm set for a 40-minute-early arrival, not a start-time arrival
