GATE CE 2027 Syllabus: Topics Removed and What to Do

The GATE CE 2027 syllabus drops prestressed concrete, free vibration of an undamped single-degree-of-freedom system, dynamic pile formulae, and remote sensing and GIS. In the sixteen Civil papers from 2019 to 2026 those four carried 25 marks. The flexibility method and plate girders go too, with no counted marks behind them, and horizontal and vertical curves leave Geomatics but stay examinable under Transportation.

This guide lists each removal with the papers it appeared in, states the one serious counter-argument, and says what to do in practice.

Key takeaways

How the comparison was made

The two official syllabus documents, 2026 and 2027, were compared word by word. A phrase counts as removed only when one of its content words has no relative anywhere in the 2027 document. Words that differ only in spelling are held back: 2026's "run-off" against 2027's "runoff", "Meyerhoff" against "Meyerhof".

On that test nine phrases are gone, twenty-nine are new, four differ only in spelling, and 117 are unchanged. You can check the largest claim yourself: read the Concrete Structures line of each document, one after the other. It takes under a minute.

The removals, with the marks they carried

Counted across all sixteen papers, Set 1 and Set 2 in each of the eight years:

Removed topic Section Counted marks Where it was set
Prestressed concrete beams Structural 14 Seven papers, listed below
Free vibration of an undamped SDOF system Structural 8 2019 Set 1, 2021 Set 2 (two questions), 2022 Set 2, 2024 Set 2
Dynamic pile formulae Geotechnical 2 2019 Set 2
Remote sensing and GIS Geomatics 1 2023 Set 1
The flexibility method Structural none —
Plate girders Structural none —
Horizontal and vertical curves, as Geomatics Geomatics none Still in Transportation

Twenty-five marks in all, 1.6 a paper on average. The highest single paper is 2022 Set 2 at 4 marks, which set both a prestressed question and a free-vibration question. Because Civil is two papers a year, "2022" on its own names nothing checkable; the two sets are scored separately and brought onto one scale by normalisation.

Prestressed concrete: 14 marks across seven papers

The 2026 Concrete Structures line ended "Bond and development length; Prestressed concrete beams." The 2027 line ends "Bond and development length." and names isolated footings in its place.

Paper Marks on prestressed concrete
2020 Set 1 2
2020 Set 2 2
2021 Set 1 2
2022 Set 2 2
2024 Set 1 2
2026 Set 1 2
2026 Set 2 2

Neither set of 2019, 2023 or 2025 had a prestressed question. So this was concrete's most reliable two marks in five of the seven years from 2020 to 2026, which is why its removal changes how Structural Engineering should be read. A weightage table compiled before 2027 overstates the Structural marks a candidate can prepare for.

The counter-argument, stated fairly

2027 still names "Design and detailing of beams, slabs, columns, and isolated footings", and a prestressed beam is a beam. That is not a silly reading. A setter could argue that a prestressed beam question sits inside it.

The book's reading goes the other way, for one reason. The 2026 syllabus named "Design of beams, slabs, columns" and "Prestressed concrete beams" as two separate items, so the organisers themselves did not treat the first as covering the second. Deleting the separate line is a deletion, not a re-absorption. Every affected question in the counted record keeps Structural Engineering recorded as its alternative, so a reader who disagrees can move all fourteen marks back and see exactly what changes.

There is a second reason for caution. Examiners do occasionally set questions on material that neither syllabus names. The risk of dropping prestress entirely is small, not zero.

The honest bottom line

Judgement: a candidate short of time skips prestressed concrete and spends the hour on the twenty-nine newly named phrases, most of which no past paper covers. A candidate with time in hand loses nothing by an hour on it. That ordering is the author's, and no count supports it on its own.

Free vibration: 8 marks across four papers

2026's Engineering Mechanics ended "Centre of mass; Free Vibrations of undamped SDOF system." 2027's ends "Centre of mass." The word vibration appears nowhere in the 2027 document. The four papers that set it asked for a natural frequency, and 2021 Set 2 asked twice. Engineering Mechanics is now down to systems of forces, internal forces, friction and centre of mass.

Dynamic pile formulae: 2 marks, 2019 Set 2

2026 read "Deep foundations – dynamic and static formulae"; 2027 reads "Deep foundations – static formulae", and the word dynamic appears nowhere else in it. The Engineering News Record formula, set in 2019 Set 2 for two marks, is a dynamic formula. Everything around it stays: static formulae, pile load test, pile group efficiency, negative skin friction and piles under lateral loading.

Remote sensing and GIS: 1 mark, 2023 Set 1

This removal is small in marks and large in meaning, because Geomatics was rewritten rather than trimmed. Out went remote sensing, GIS and the curves. In came GNSS and geodetic surveying, cartography and map projections, cadastral surveying, space resection, parallax equations, camera calibration and digital photogrammetry. Photographic scale and flying height survive. Geomatics averaged 4.4 marks a paper, and it is the one section where old questions are the weakest guide to new ones.

The GATE CE 2027 book prints all twenty-nine newly named phrases against their 2026 wording and includes questions on newly named topics. None of its 924 questions rests on deleted material. See what the book contains.

Removed with no marks: the flexibility method and plate girders

2026 said "Stiffness and flexibility methods of structural analysis". 2027 keeps the stiffness matrix method and drops the word flexibility. Force methods have not gone: 2027 names analysis of indeterminate structures "by force and displacement methods", with the method of consistent deformations newly listed. Keep the flexibility method as background; it is not worth a dedicated study block.

Plate girders drop out of the Steel Structures line, which otherwise keeps everything it had and gains plastic analysis of portal frames. Steel deserves full attention for another reason: across 2019 Set 1 and 2019 Set 2, set by IIT Madras, Steel drew 10 marks and Concrete 1. The organising institute guide covers what that can and cannot tell you.

Curves: moved, not removed

2026 listed horizontal and vertical curves under Geomatics. 2027 deletes the line, and the word curve appears nowhere in the 2027 CE syllabus. That does not take curves off the paper. Transportation names "horizontal and vertical alignments" in both years, and an alignment is built of curves. Judgement: curve questions belong to Transportation's geometric design, so nothing is saved by skipping them.

One more phrase looks removed and is not. Random variables were "discrete and continuous" in 2026; 2027 replaces that with axioms of probability, statistical independence, and probability mass, density and cumulative distribution functions. That is a widening. Learn the definitions.

What to do in practice

  1. In old papers, strike out the removed-topic questions rather than solving them. Both 2020 papers carry a two-mark prestressed question, so a 2020 paper solved in full spends part of your evening on it.
  2. Give the time saved to the new phrases. Transportation Planning, four-step travel demand modelling, drew zero marks in all 1,040 counted questions because it was not on the syllabus. Read it.
  3. Do not skip a topic because its count is low. A low count can be an artefact of how questions were classified.

The syllabus can be revised, so check the current notification on the official GATE 2027 website and the GATE 2027 exam dates guide. For how MSQ and NAT are marked on every paper, see the marking scheme guide, written for CSE but common to Civil. GATE Guide is independent and is not affiliated with IIT Madras, IISc or GATE.

Frequently asked questions

Which topics were removed from the GATE CE 2027 syllabus?

Prestressed concrete beams, free vibration of an undamped single-degree-of-freedom system, dynamic pile formulae, remote sensing and GIS, the flexibility method and plate girders. Horizontal and vertical curves leave Geomatics but remain under Transportation's geometric design. The first four carried 25 marks across the sixteen Civil papers from 2019 to 2026.

Is prestressed concrete in the GATE CE 2027 syllabus?

Not by name. The 2026 Concrete Structures line ended with prestressed concrete beams, and the 2027 line ends at bond and development length and adds isolated footings. The fair counter-argument is that 2027 still names design and detailing of beams. Short of time, skip it. With time in hand, an hour on it costs you nothing.

How many marks did the removed GATE CE topics carry?

Twenty-five marks across sixteen counted papers - 14 for prestressed concrete over seven papers, 8 for free vibration over four, 2 for dynamic pile formulae in 2019 Set 2, and 1 for remote sensing and GIS in 2023 Set 1. That averages 1.6 marks a paper, with a highest single paper of 4 marks in 2022 Set 2.

Are horizontal and vertical curves removed from GATE CE 2027?

Only from Geomatics. The word curve appears nowhere in the 2027 CE syllabus, but Transportation names horizontal and vertical alignments in both 2026 and 2027, and an alignment is built from curves. A transition or summit curve question is a vertical or horizontal alignment question, so nothing is saved by skipping curves.

Should I solve removed-topic questions in GATE CE previous year papers?

Recognise them and strike them out. Solving them spends practice time on material the 2027 syllabus no longer names and keeps the topic alive in your revision. The one exception is prestressed concrete, where a candidate with spare time loses nothing by an hour of reading, because the counter-argument about beams is a fair one.
