Free Resources for GATE CSE Preparation That Are Actually Useful

Almost everything you need to prepare for GATE CSE already exists free: the official syllabus and marking scheme, every question ever asked with its official answer key, and complete lecture courses taught by faculty at the institutes that set the paper. The scarce things are ordering and measurement. This guide lists the free sources worth your time, says what each one is good for, and is honest about the two jobs none of them does.

The official sources

These come first because they settle every disagreement. GATE 2027 is organised by IIT Madras, the examination runs on 6–7, 13–14 and 20–21 February 2027, and results are announced on 19 March 2027. Dates and documents can change, so read them at the source.

One habit is worth forming now: whenever a guide, a course or a video contradicts the syllabus PDF, the PDF wins. The 2027 wording is not the 2026 wording. Computer Networks lost about a third of its list, Computer Organization gained control-unit design and cache mapping as explicit items, and Digital Logic named the tabular minimisation method for the first time. Papers from earlier years sit on the sites of the institutes that organised them, which stay online after the cycle ends. IISc Bangalore organised GATE 2024 and IIT Bombay organised GATE 2021, and both archives are still reachable.

Public question archives

Twenty-seven years of CSE papers are the single most valuable free asset in this examination, and they are more useful arranged by topic than by year.

Two cautions. First, community answers are not official answers; where an archive shows a disputed key, treat it as disputed. Second, an archive does not know the 2027 syllabus, so questions on removed Computer Networks topics — layer identification, framing, bridging, ARP, DHCP, ICMP, UDP, SMTP, FTP and email — will still appear in your topic lists. Free lecture courses

NPTEL is an online learning initiative run by IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Guwahati, IIT Roorkee, IIT Madras and IISc Bangalore, funded by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. Its material is published under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike licence and course videos are free to watch. Computer science courses sit under the discipline code that begins 106, and the catalogue includes full courses on operating systems, theory of computation, algorithms, databases, computer networks, compiler design and discrete mathematics, taught by faculty at those institutes.

Three rules for using them well.

• One course per subject. Finish it. Four started courses on the same subject is the most common way a free preparation fails.
• Use them for the subjects you find hardest, and read for the rest. A lecture hour on a topic you already know costs the same as one on a topic you do not.
• Add the timing yourself. Academic courses teach the concept; they do not drill a cache field-width calculation to 60 seconds or a Gantt chart to three minutes. That gap is yours to close with past questions and a stopwatch.

Course offerings and run dates change every semester, so search the catalogue rather than relying on a link posted in an article.

Free guides on this site

This site publishes its guides free, including the subject-by-subject topic lists, the subject-wise weightage from 2009 to 2026, the exam pattern, the syllabus changes and a formula sheet for every subject. What free resources do not give you

Being clear about this saves months.

None of this is an argument against free resources. It is an argument for pairing them with one ordered source and one scored test series, whichever you choose. The self study versus coaching comparison works through that decision.

A free-only stack that works

If you intend to spend nothing at all, assemble it deliberately rather than by accident.

1. Syllabus and pattern from the official site, printed, with every topic you have finished ticked on the printout.
2. One lecture course per subject for the three or four subjects you find hardest; standard textbooks for the rest.
3. One archive as your primary, solved topic-wise, from 2014 to 2026 first and older years afterwards for the concepts that repeat.
4. Past papers as tests, but only papers you have not already solved question by question, sat in full 180-minute sittings with the official marking scheme.
5. A handwritten error log, one page per subject, recording the rule you broke rather than the correct answer.
6. A dated plan, such as the 20-week preparation strategy, with a written rule for what happens when a week is missed.

The weak point of this stack is step 4, because a paper you have already studied cannot measure you. Keep two recent papers completely unseen until January, and sit them cold.

Checking a free resource before you trust it

• Does it state the syllabus year it was written for? Anything silent about this is suspect.
• Does its answer match the official key, and if not, does it say why?
• Does it use the current pattern, including multiple select questions with no partial credit and numerical answer questions with no negative marking?
• Is it teaching a topic that the 2027 list removed?
