GATE EE Previous Year Papers: How to Analyse and Use Them

GATE EE previous year papers are the only real questions you will see before the exam, so how you use them matters more than how many you solve. The method is three steps: sit the paper timed, count it by section and topic, and log every lost mark by its cause. This guide teaches that method on the five official papers from 2022 to 2026, and explains why one paper a year shows patterns rather than trends.

Key takeaways

The terms this method uses

A previous year paper, or PYQ paper, is the official question paper of a past GATE EE exam. Its official answer key gives the correct option or the accepted numerical range for every question, and its marks and type.

Counting a paper means placing each question in one syllabus section and one topic, then adding marks. An error log is a running record of every mark you lost, with its cause. Those three things turn a paper from a score into a lesson.

Step 1: sit the paper under real conditions

Give yourself three hours, a quiet room and the on-screen style of calculator only. Answer in the order you would on the day.

  1. Do not look anything up. A question you cannot start is information, not failure.
  2. Mark each answer as sure, unsure or guessed as you go.
  3. Enter a number for every NAT, since NATs carry no penalty.
  4. Stop at three hours, even if you are mid-question.

Then mark the paper against its official key. Remember the MCQ penalty: minus one-third on a 1-mark MCQ and minus two-thirds on a 2-mark MCQ.

Remember: A paper sat untimed tells you what you know. A paper sat timed tells you what you can score.

Step 2: count the paper by section and topic

Make a table with one row per section and columns for marks available, marks attempted and marks scored. Then go one level down and list the topic of each question you lost.

The five counted papers all share one frame, so your table will always close on the same totals.

Check Every EE paper, 2022-2026
Questions 65
Marks 100
One-mark / two-mark questions 30 / 35
General Aptitude 10 questions, 15 marks
Technical 55 questions, 85 marks

Where a question could sit in two sections, write both. A network transient inside a converter question is still a circuits skill you lost.

Step 3: log every lost mark by cause

This is the step most candidates skip, and it is the one that changes your next score. Each lost mark gets exactly one of four causes:

A worked example

Suppose a candidate sits a paper and finds 24 marks lost on questions they attempted or left. These figures are made up. They classify them like this:

Cause Marks lost Share
Misread 4 16.7%
Wrong method or formula 7 29.2%
Arithmetic or sign slip 5 20.8%
Not known 8 33.3%
Total 24 100%

Each share is the marks for that cause divided by 24. Only the last row, about a third of the loss, needs more study. Misreads need slower reading of the last line. Wrong formulas need a revision card. Slips need a habit of checking units and signs.

Trap: Calling every lost mark "not known" sends you back to theory you already have. Two-thirds of the loss in this example would not be fixed by more reading.

How to spend the five papers

Five papers are 325 real questions, and that is all there is. Spend them on purpose. The GATE EE 2027 book recommends this order, and it is a judgement rather than a count.

Paper When How
2022 In your first few weeks Timed, before you have learned much, as a map of the exam; it is also the one paper with no MSQ
2023, 2024 As each section is learned Section by section, against your notes
2025, 2026 Near the end Full timed papers, treated like mocks

The reason for holding two back is simple. Once you have seen a paper, it can never measure you cleanly again.

EE sets one paper a year, so each year gives a single observation per section. Consecutive papers differed by 20, 16, 16 and 24 marks out of 85, summing the section-by-section differences. Not one technical section rose in every step from 2022 to 2026, and not one fell in every step.

So a section that drops sharply in one year, such as Signals and Systems at 4 marks in 2026, is one draw. A pattern is what keeps appearing: ten technical topic groups drew marks in all five papers. A trend would be a steady movement, and five points cannot separate that from chance.

In one line: Use old papers to learn how a topic is asked and roughly what it carries; use the syllabus for everything else.

What the five papers have in common

A few features held under five organisers and are safe to practise for:

Practise NAT arithmetic with the GATE virtual calculator guide, and check how each type is marked in the marking scheme, which is common to every paper. Plan when to sit each paper backwards from the GATE 2027 exam dates, and see how raw marks become a score in the normalisation guide. The book cites every question of these papers by year and number inside each subject chapter, so you can find what a section asked in seconds.

Quick revision

  1. Five official EE papers, 2022-2026: 325 questions, 500 marks.
  2. Mark every paper against its official key, with MCQ penalties applied.
  3. Count each paper by section and topic; every count closes on 65 questions and 100 marks.
  4. Log each lost mark as misread, wrong method, slip or not known.
  5. Only "not known" needs more study; the other three need habits.
  6. Sit 2022 early, work 2023 and 2024 by section, hold 2025 and 2026 for the end.
  7. Five papers show patterns, not trends.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I download GATE EE previous year question papers?

From the organising institutes' own websites. The GATE 2026 portal run by IIT Guwahati hosts the 2026 EE paper and key and an archive of earlier papers and keys, and the GATE 2025 portal run by IIT Roorkee hosts 2025. Always pair a paper with its official answer key rather than a solved-papers book.

How many GATE EE previous year papers should I solve?

Solve every recent paper properly rather than many papers loosely. The five official EE papers from 2022 to 2026 give 325 questions, all but one inside the 2027 syllabus. Working each one timed and analysing every lost mark is worth more than skimming older papers whose syllabus may differ.

Are GATE EE previous year questions repeated?

The wording is not repeated, but topics and question shapes are. Ten technical topic groups, including induction machines, op-amps, network transients and economic dispatch, drew marks in all five papers from 2022 to 2026. Learn the method behind each pattern rather than memorising any one question.

When should I start solving GATE EE previous year papers?

Sit one paper early as a map of what the exam looks like, before you have learned much. Work the next papers section by section as you finish each subject. Hold the two most recent papers back and sit them as full timed tests near the end, because a paper seen once is never a clean test again.
