GATE ME 2027 New Topics: Transmissibility, PID, Boiling and More

The GATE ME 2027 syllabus names a set of topics the 2026 document never printed: the transmissibility ratio, PID control and transfer functions, boiling and condensation, combustion, pumps, belt drives, casting defects, actuators and PLCs, and work study with six sigma. Most of them have no question in any of the six counted papers from 2022 to 2026. This guide takes each one in turn and says how much to read, so you can cover the additions without overspending on them.

Key takeaways

Two kinds of addition, and why the difference matters

An addition is a phrase printed in the 2027 syllabus and not in 2026. Some additions put a new name on old material. Converging-diverging nozzles were new wording in 2027, yet 2024 (Q40) asked about a normal shock in one. For those, past papers still give practice.

Other additions are genuinely new to the record. The papers of 2024, 2025 and 2026 were set on a syllabus that did not name them, so no question there could have been set on them under those names. For these, the syllabus line is your only guide.

Remember: A zero beside a newly named topic means the topic is new, not that it is rare. It tells you nothing about 2027 either way.

New topic Paragraph Counted questions, 2022-2026 Suggested reading
Transmissibility ratio Vibrations 3 papers set forced vibration and transmissibility Formula and the 2\sqrt{2} crossing

The reading times are a planning judgement, not a count.

Transmissibility and the control-systems line

The transmissibility ratio TRTR compares the force passed to the foundation with the force applied. It depends on the frequency ratio rr (forcing frequency over natural frequency) and the damping ratio ζ\zeta:

TR=1+(2ζr)2(1−r2)2+(2ζr)2TR = \frac{\sqrt{1 + (2\zeta r)^{2}}}{\sqrt{(1 - r^{2})^{2} + (2\zeta r)^{2}}}

Worked example

Take r=2r = 2 and ζ=0.1\zeta = 0.1. Then 2ζr=0.42\zeta r = 0.4, so the numerator is 1.16=1.077\sqrt{1.16} = 1.077. The denominator is (1−4)2+0.16=9.16=3.027\sqrt{(1 - 4)^{2} + 0.16} = \sqrt{9.16} = 3.027. So TR=1.077/3.027=0.356TR = 1.077/3.027 = 0.356. Only about a third of the force reaches the base.

Trap: Isolation happens only above r=2r = \sqrt{2}, where TR=1TR = 1 for every damping ratio. Above that point, more damping raises TRTR; near resonance it lowers it. Students who assume damping always helps lose this mark.

The control-systems line asks for less than a control course. Know that a transfer function is output over input in Laplace form, that negative feedback gives G/(1+GH)G/(1 + GH), and that a system is stable when every closed-loop pole has a negative real part. Then know the three PID terms: proportional reduces the error but leaves an offset, integral removes the steady-state error to a step, and derivative adds damping.

Boiling, condensation and combustion

Boiling is read off the pool-boiling curve: free convection, nucleate boiling, transition and film boiling, with the critical heat flux at the top of the nucleate regime. Condensation has two modes, and dropwise gives a much higher heat transfer coefficient than filmwise. That is most of what a first question can ask.

Combustion asks for the air-fuel ratio and the equivalence ratio. The equivalence ratio ϕ\phi is the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio divided by the actual one; ϕ<1\phi < 1 is lean and ϕ>1\phi > 1 is rich.

Worked example

Burn methane, CH4+2(O2+3.76 N2)\text{CH}_4 + 2(\text{O}_2 + 3.76\,\text{N}_2). The stoichiometric air-fuel ratio by mass is 2×4.76×28.97/16.04=17.22 \times 4.76 \times 28.97/16.04 = 17.2. If an engine runs at an actual air-fuel ratio of 20, then ϕ=17.2/20=0.86\phi = 17.2/20 = 0.86, which is lean. The excess air is (1/0.86−1)×100=16.3(1/0.86 - 1) \times 100 = 16.3 per cent.

Pumps, belt drives and casting defects

Pumps and pump characteristics extend the turbomachinery line that 2025 and 2026 already examined. Learn that head falls as flow rises, that the operating point is where the pump curve meets the system curve, and how series and parallel pumps combine. Add the affinity laws and the cavitation condition on NPSH.

Belt drives sit under Machine Design. No counted question set one as a design element. Learn the tension ratio and the power transmitted, which you may already know from friction in Engineering Mechanics.

Casting defects are a list with causes: shrinkage cavities from poor feeding, gas porosity from moisture or low permeability, misruns and cold shuts from low fluidity, hot tears from restrained contraction. Casting itself drew marks in five of the six papers, so these sit next to well-practised material.

Actuators, PLCs and the industrial-engineering additions

The new automation line asks for pneumatic, electro-pneumatic and hydraulic actuators and programmable logic controllers. For a cylinder, the extending force is pressure times bore area, and the retracting force uses the bore area minus the rod area. For a PLC, know the scan cycle (read inputs, run the program, update outputs) and that series contacts are AND and parallel contacts are OR.

Under Production Planning and Control, work study gives standard time from observed time. Normal time is observed time times rating; standard time adds the allowance. If you observe 1.5 minutes at a 120 per cent rating with a 15 per cent allowance, normal time is 1.5×1.2=1.81.5 \times 1.2 = 1.8 minutes and standard time is 1.8×1.15=2.071.8 \times 1.15 = 2.07 minutes. Add six sigma (DMAIC and defects per million), productivity as output over input, and reliability for series and parallel systems.

In one line: Each new topic is a formula or a list you can learn in an evening; the risk is not difficulty but forgetting it exists.

The last-minute sheet in the GATE ME 2027 book gives every one of these topics a formula entry, and its question bank marks the questions written on syllabus authority alone. Practise the numericals on the GATE virtual calculator, because several of these, like the transmissibility ratio, are typed as NATs. The NAT and MCQ marking rules are common to every paper; see the marking scheme guide, written for CSE but valid for ME.

When to fit them in

Give the additions one dedicated week in the middle of your plan, and a half-day revisit in the last month. In the final fortnight, they are the one exception to "start nothing new", because they are short enough to finish. Confirm your exam date on the GATE 2027 dates page and plan backwards from it.

Quick revision

  1. Transmissibility: TR=1TR = 1 at r=2r = \sqrt{2}; isolation needs r>2r > \sqrt{2}.
  2. PID: proportional leaves an offset, integral removes it, derivative adds damping.
  3. Boiling regimes: free convection, nucleate, transition, film; critical heat flux tops the nucleate regime.
  4. Equivalence ratio ϕ\phi = stoichiometric over actual air-fuel ratio; below 1 is lean.
  5. Pump operating point: pump curve meets system curve.
  6. Casting defects: know each with its cause.
  7. Standard time = observed time × rating × (1 + allowance).
  8. No counted paper set control, boiling, combustion, actuators, PLCs, work study or six sigma.

Frequently asked questions

What new topics were added to the GATE ME 2027 syllabus?

The main additions are the transmissibility ratio and a control-systems line with PID controller and transfer function under Vibrations, belt drives, velocity potential, boiling and condensation, basics of combustion with air-fuel and equivalence ratios, pumps and pump characteristics, casting defects, tool geometry, actuators and programmable logic controllers, and work study, productivity, six sigma, quality and reliability.

Are the new GATE ME 2027 topics in previous year papers?

Most are not. Control systems, boiling and condensation, combustion, actuators, PLCs, work study, productivity, six sigma, and quality and reliability have no counted question in the six papers from 2022 to 2026. A few additions name material already set, such as transmissibility, nozzles and additive manufacturing, so past papers still help there.

How much time should I give the new GATE ME 2027 topics?

Most are short. A transmissibility curve, three controller terms, a boiling curve with four regimes, a stoichiometric balance and a time-study formula each reward a careful first reading and a handful of questions. The book's plan suggests one dedicated week in the middle of preparation and a half-day revisit in the last month. That is a judgement, not a count.

Is control systems part of GATE ME 2027?

Yes. The 2027 Vibrations paragraph ends with control system, PID controller and transfer function. You should know what a transfer function is, how negative feedback changes it, the stability condition on the poles, and what each of the proportional, integral and derivative terms does to the error and the overshoot.
