GATE ECE 2027 Syllabus PDF: Every Section Explained
The official GATE ECE 2027 syllabus is a short PDF on the IIT Madras GATE portal: eight technical sections, each a paragraph or two of comma-separated phrases. It tells you what may be asked but not what usually is. This guide reads the whole document section by section, says what each line means in exam terms, and sets each section against the marks it averaged in the five EC papers the ECE book counted.

Key takeaways
- The paper is 100 marks: 15 for General Aptitude, which is common to every GATE paper and not printed in the EC syllabus, and 85 across eight technical sections.
- Counted means across 2010, 2019, 2020, 2025 and 2026 run from 17.0 marks (Networks, Signals and Systems) to 7.4 (Electromagnetics).
- Every syllabus phrase is examinable, but many have never produced a counted question. Read the document for scope, and the counts for emphasis.
- Two sections, Digital Circuits and Electromagnetics, are word for word the same as 2026.
- Download the PDF yourself from the official site and read it once; it takes about fifteen minutes.
How to read a syllabus line
A syllabus line is a list of phrases, each naming something examinable. It does not say how deep, how often or in what form. Two habits turn it into a plan.
First, translate each phrase into the question it can produce. "Sinusoidal steady state analysis: phasors, complex power, maximum power transfer" means: find a current in an AC network, find real or reactive power, find the load that takes maximum power.
Second, set the phrase against the record. Of those three, phasor analysis appeared in all five counted papers, maximum power transfer in one, and power, as a source's power or the average power at resonance, in two. Same line, very different weight.
Remember: The syllabus fixes the boundary; the counted papers show where the marks have landed inside it. You need both, and neither replaces the other.
The paper at a glance
| Section | Counted mean | Range across five papers | Changed for 2027? |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Aptitude | 15.0 | 15 to 15 | common to all papers |
| Networks, Signals and Systems | 17.0 | 13 to 21 | yes |
| Engineering Mathematics | 12.0 | 9 to 15 | yes |
| Analog Circuits | 10.8 | 9 to 13 | yes |
| Communications | 10.0 | 9 to 12 | yes |
| Digital Circuits | 9.8 | 6 to 13 | no |
| Electronic Devices | 8.8 | 7 to 11 | yes |
| Control Systems | 8.0 | 6 to 10 | yes |
| Electromagnetics | 7.4 | 6 to 9 | no |
The means and ranges are counts from five papers, not a forecast. The subject-wise weightage guide gives every year's figure.
Section 1: Engineering Mathematics
The syllabus has six headings: linear algebra, calculus, differential equations, vector analysis, complex analysis, and probability and statistics. In exam terms, linear algebra means rank, solutions of and eigenvalues; calculus means maxima and minima, mean value theorems and multiple integrals; differential equations means second-order linear equations and the Euler-Cauchy form.
Four of the six headings appeared in every counted paper. The 2027 text added correlation and regression and removed first-order nonlinear equations, so drop the Bernoulli and exactness drills.
Section 2: Networks, Signals and Systems
The largest section, and the only one a candidate cannot route around. Its circuit half covers node and mesh analysis, Thevenin, Norton, reciprocity, phasors, complex power, transients, Laplace solution and two-port parameters. Its signals half covers LTI properties, convolution, Fourier series and transform, sampling, the DTFT, DFT, z-transform and, new for 2027, FIR and IIR filter design.
The 2027 text also moved the LTI paragraph ahead of the signal paragraphs without changing a word. Read that as advice to learn LTI properties as the spine and hang the transforms off them.
Section 3: Electronic Devices
Energy bands, carrier concentration, drift and diffusion, generation and recombination, Poisson and continuity equations, then the devices: p-n junction, Zener, BJT, MOS capacitor, MOSFET, LED, photodiode and solar cell. New for 2027 are band formation and MOSFET scaling.
The book's count shows topics here repeating while the concept inside each rotates. So prepare one formula per device, not deep drills on one.
Section 4: Analog Circuits
Three sentences. Diode circuits: clipping, clamping and rectifiers. BJT and MOSFET amplifiers: biasing, AC coupling, small-signal analysis, frequency response, current mirrors and differential amplifiers. Op-amp circuits: amplifiers, summers, integrators, active filters, Schmitt trigger and oscillators, plus, new for 2027, dominant-pole compensation and phase margin.
Ideal-diode networks and op-amps solved by the virtual short each appeared in four of five counted papers. Oscillators, though named, produced none.
Section 5: Digital Circuits
Unchanged from 2026. Number representations, Boolean algebra and K-maps, static CMOS gates, arithmetic circuits, multiplexers and decoders, flip-flops, counters, shift registers, state machines, timing, data converters, memories and Computer Organization.
One line in that list stands out. Computer Organization, with its instructions, addressing modes, data path and pipelining, produced zero counted questions in five papers. It is legal, so give it a definitions-level hour, not a week.
Section 6: Control Systems
One long sentence: feedback, transfer functions, block diagrams and signal flow graphs, transient and steady-state response, Routh-Hurwitz and Nyquist, Bode and root locus, compensators and the PID controller, and state-variable models.
The 2027 text replaced the named lag, lead and lag-lead line with "compensators" and added PID. Lead and lag remain the ordinary content of the word "compensators"; PID is the genuinely new name.
Section 7: Communications
Four headings: random processes, analog communications (AM, FM, superheterodyne), information theory (entropy, mutual information, capacity, and new for 2027 source coding), and digital communications (PCM, modulation schemes, bandwidth, MAP and ML detection, matched filter, BER, Hamming codes, CRC).
Detection and error probability appeared in all five counted papers. Superheterodyne receivers and CRC appeared in none.
Section 8: Electromagnetics
Unchanged from 2026. Maxwell's equations and boundary conditions, plane waves, polarization, skin depth, transmission lines, S-parameters, the Smith chart, waveguides, optical fibres and antennas.
The official 2027 PDF prints "Sparameters" without its hyphen. That is a typesetting slip, not a change. Every counted waveguide question was rectangular, and optical fibres produced none.
Trap: Treating every phrase as equally likely. "Wye-delta transformation" and "phasors" sit in the same paragraph, yet wye-delta has no counted question in five papers and phasors appear in all five.
A worked example: turning one line into a study plan
Take the Communications phrase "Fundamentals of error correction, Hamming codes, CRC".
- Translate. Hamming codes means codewords, minimum distance and what a code can detect and correct. CRC means polynomial division of a bit string.
- Check the record. Hamming codes appeared in three counted papers: 2019 Q17, 2025 Q33 and 2026 Q63. CRC appeared in none.
- Budget. Hamming codes sit in the book's second tier, two to three hours. CRC gets a definitions-level half hour.
Three minutes of reading turned one line into two very different budgets.
In one line: Read the PDF for what is allowed, the counts for what has been asked, and budget each phrase by the second.
Where to go next
The 2027 syllabus changes guide lists exactly what moved between 2026 and 2027. The important topics guide ranks the concepts inside these sections, and the General Aptitude guide covers the 15 marks the EC document leaves out. Exam dates and deadlines are in the GATE 2027 dates guide; check the current notification for any change. The ECE book maps every syllabus line to its counted questions, with a chapter per section.

Frequently asked questions
Where can I download the official GATE ECE 2027 syllabus PDF?
The official EC syllabus is published by IIT Madras on the GATE 2027 portal, gate2027.iitm.ac.in, under its syllabus downloads. Read it there before building a plan, because organising institutes sometimes reissue syllabus documents with corrections. The official PDF is the authority; any summary, including this one, is a convenience.
How many sections are in the GATE ECE 2027 syllabus?
Eight technical sections, Engineering Mathematics, Networks Signals and Systems, Electronic Devices, Analog Circuits, Digital Circuits, Control Systems, Communications and Electromagnetics, worth 85 marks together. General Aptitude adds 15 marks and is common to every GATE paper, so it is not printed in the EC syllabus document itself.
Which section of the GATE ECE syllabus carries the most marks?
Networks, Signals and Systems, with a mean of 17.0 marks across the five EC papers the ECE book counted, 2010, 2019, 2020, 2025 and 2026. Engineering Mathematics follows at 12.0 and Analog Circuits at 10.8. Electromagnetics is smallest at 7.4, but it never fell below 6 marks in any counted paper.
Did the GATE ECE syllabus change for 2027?
Yes, modestly. Comparing the official 2026 and 2027 PDFs, twelve phrases were added and five removed, and the eight section headings stayed the same. Digital Circuits and Electromagnetics did not change at all. The largest addition is FIR and IIR filter design in Networks, Signals and Systems.
